Wheel balancing in Edgware
Steering wheel vibrating between 50 and 70mph? A wheel is almost certainly out of balance. We'll have it sorted, usually in 10–15 minutes per wheel.
What balancing fixes
Every wheel — even a brand-new one with a brand-new tyre — has tiny variations in weight around its rim. We spin each wheel on a balancing machine to measure exactly where it's heavy, then fit small lead or stick-on weights to cancel it out. The result is a wheel that rotates smoothly at every speed.
Signs your wheels need balancing
- Vibration through the steering wheel at motorway speed
- Vibration through the seat or floor (often a rear wheel)
- 'Cupping' or scalloped wear patterns on a tyre
- A visible weight that has fallen off your rim
- It just feels rougher than it used to
What's involved
- Wheel removed from the car
- Cleaned, then spun on the balancer to find the heavy point
- Old weights removed, new weights fitted to the exact position
- Re-spun and re-checked until it reads zero imbalance
- Refitted to the car and torqued to spec

Common questions we hear in the workshop
Why is my steering wheel vibrating?+
The most common cause is a wheel that's out of balance — usually because a balance weight has come off or a new tyre hasn't been balanced after fitting. Vibration that gets worse at motorway speeds (50–70 mph) and through the steering wheel is the classic sign.
Can wheel balancing stop uneven tyre wear?+
It can stop one specific kind — the 'cupping' or scalloped wear pattern caused by a wheel that's been bouncing slightly out of balance for thousands of miles. It won't fix wear caused by alignment problems, which is a different job.
How long does wheel balancing take?+
About 10–15 minutes per wheel including remove, balance and refit. A full set of four is usually 30–45 minutes.
Will balancing improve fuel economy?+
Slightly. Out-of-balance wheels create extra rolling resistance and uneven tyre wear, both of which hurt MPG a little. The bigger win is comfort and tyre life, not fuel savings on their own.
Is balancing included when I buy new tyres from you?+
Yes — every new tyre and every puncture repair includes balancing as standard. You only pay for stand-alone balancing if you bring wheels in separately.
Do I need to balance all four wheels?+
Not always. If only one is causing vibration we can balance just that one. If it's been a long time since the car was checked, doing all four at the same time gives the best ride and is usually only a small step up in price.
